The Ultimate Guide to Planning the Perfect Proposal
Proposals are a one-of-a-kind event — nerve-racking but exciting, beautiful and romantic. I mean, what’s more romantic than asking the one you love to become your forever? As a photographer, I have been honored to witness all types of proposals and wanted to share some tips that can help make your proposal go incredibly smoothly!
Have a Plan
This sounds like something so simple, but it’s absolutely necessary to calm your nerves and make sure the proposal goes smoothly. If you aren’t the type who likes to plan, have someone close to you help map it out! Knowing the general flow of how you want things to go will ease your nerves and ensure the moment is perfect.
Choose the Right Location
Choosing the location where you’ll pop the question is incredibly important. Is there a place that’s special to you both? The spot of your first date? A beautiful scenic overlook? Knowing your partner’s preference is key. If they’re a private person, maybe a quiet, intimate location is best. If they love big gestures, a public space where people can cheer you on might be ideal. This is a day they’ll remember forever, so choose a place that will feel meaningful.
Know Your Partner’s Preferences
Before planning your proposal, take time to understand your partner’s vision. Do they dream of a quiet, intimate proposal or something extravagant? Would they love to have friends and family involved or prefer a private moment between the two of you? Knowing these things can help you tailor the proposal to be uniquely special to them.
Know What You’re Going to Say
We get it — nerves are REAL. It’s totally normal to blank out in the moment, but having a general idea of what you want to say is helpful. Take time to think about why you love them, why you want to marry them, and how much they mean to you. Even if you fumble a bit, the sincerity of your words will make the moment perfect.
Have a Backup Plan
Life happens — weather changes, traffic delays, unexpected hiccups. Always have a backup plan in case your original plan doesn’t work out. This ensures that no matter what, you’ll still be able to pop the question in a meaningful and special way. And don’t worry — your partner will love the thought you put into it, no matter what happens!
Hire a Photographer
A proposal is a once-in-a-lifetime moment and absolutely deserves to be captured! Hiring a professional photographer who has experience with proposals is so important. Proposals move FAST and require skill to capture the emotion, the surprise, and the joy all at once. Make sure your photographer is confident, experienced, and equipped to capture the moment beautifully.
Stay on One Knee Longer Than You Think You Should
This tip is GOLD, especially if you’ve hired a photographer. Staying on one knee just a little longer gives the photographer extra time to capture those heartfelt shots of you popping the question. It also gives you both a few extra moments to soak it all in.
Enjoy the Process
Planning a proposal can be stressful — you want everything to be perfect, and that’s totally understandable! But don’t forget to enjoy the process. This is a moment you’ll both remember for the rest of your lives. Take a deep breath, embrace the excitement, and know that no matter what, your love and intention are what make the proposal truly perfect.
